Swiss Medtech: Joining forces

Switzerland's fusion of FASMED and Medical Cluster to form Swiss Medtech is sealed. The association consists of around 600 members, 1350 companies and 54,500 employees. With a turnover of 14.1 billion and a GDP share of 2.2 per cent, as well as export volumes of 10.6 billion euros, the Swiss Medtech Association is the world's largest medical technology company. CHF, medical technology is a key sector of the Swiss economy.

The two umbrella organisations of Switzerland's medical technology industry, FASMED and Medical Cluster, have been working closely together for years and have supported each other in the realisation of events.

The organizations have been working for a year on the merger to form Swiss Medtech, which has now been sealed in Bern on 12 June 2017.

With the fusion, the association has set itself the goal of "increasing the clout of the medtech industry, which is important for the Swiss healthcare system and the national economy". Peter Biedermann is the Medtech Managing Director.

With around 600 members, 1350 companies and 54,500 employees, the new association is committed to "high-quality, safe and timely patient care, to maintaining the competitive and innovative strength of the industry and to strengthening the domestic market."

Strategies, solutions and statements on relevant industry topics are developed in 20 specialist groups consisting of experts from the member companies. Swiss Medtech will regularly provide information and hold seminars under the direction of Peter Studer (Legal, Compliance and Reimbursement).

EU regulations MDR and IVDR

The introduction of the two new regulations for medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics will keep the medical technology sector very busy in the coming years. More information on the new regulation can be found in our news article on the "Effects of the EU new regulation".

The aim is to complete the incorporation of the two new regulations into Switzerland's legislation on time in order to continue to ensure the free movement of goods in Europe.

Swiss Medtech Code

Another key project is the definition of minimum requirements for ethical business conduct in medical technology, which is being carried out in cooperation with medical professionals and institutions.
