When large companies receive hundreds of applications a day, they may use artificial intelligence to pre-select them. The HR department thus supposedly saves a lot of resources and directly receives candidates who fit the position. However, it happens time and again that a non-optimized AI resume causes a potentially suitable candidate to be sorted out during the pre-selection process. Annoying for both candidate and company.

How does artificial intelligence work in recruiting?

The artificial intelligence algorithm analyzes the job posting and compares important keywords from it with the candidate's application. The more overlaps there are, the better. Based on this, the AI assigns ratings such as "80% overlap". In the process, the AI also learns which keywords are particularly important for the job posting. Anyone who does not mention sales even once in their application for a sales position will be rated significantly lower by the AI. Depending on the company and the configuration of the AI, even candidates with a small overlap are then sorted out and receive a rejection. Even without automatic rejection, applicants with a poor rating have little chance of being noticed by the company, as only the best applicants are looked at more closely by the recruiters due to time constraints.

Optimize your resume for AI

Due to the automated review of the application, some candidates may fall through the AI grid despite having sufficient qualifications. Career changers who have not listed certain keywords in their resume, spelling mistakes that cause the AI to no longer recognize the keyword, or taking certain keywords too much for granted to mention them are the most common blunders that applicants make.

Therefore, it is important to pay special attention to these factors and optimize your own application for the AI. It is also helpful to take a close look at the job posting and include important terms mentioned in it in one's application. Researchers from the USA have conducted experiments on how to trick the AI. Important finding from this: Don't overdo it with the keywords, as the AI can penalize that. With the right moderation, you can increase your chances of being invited to an interview.

Advantages and disadvantages of using AI in recruiting

It is clear why companies decide in favor of AI-supported recruiting: It saves time and money. However, it also brings disadvantages, as suitable candidates fall through the cracks due to the applicant's lack of AI knowledge. On the other hand, less suitable candidates trick their way onto recruiters' radar with customized AI applications. Potentially, recruiters miss out on candidates who would have been a perfect fit for the company at second glance. Here, each company must weigh up for itself whether and to what extent it wants to use AI in the recruiting process.
