The key to a successful career change lies not in the industry of your previous employer, but in your professional skills. From the perspective of the energy industry, four areas of expertise are particularly valuable.
Project and plant expertise. Anyone who has managed projects in plant engineering or automotive production through the planning, construction, and commissioning phases brings exactly the skills needed for grid expansion, substations, wind farms, and hydrogen facilities. Scheduling, interface management, supplier management, and leading technical teams are directly transferable. Project managers are among the most sought-after professionals in the industry.
A systemic understanding of technology. Control engineering, power electronics, mechatronics, and thermodynamic processes. All of these elements are found in powertrains as well as in energy generation, storage, and grid management. Engineers who design complex systems consisting of components, sensors, and control systems can often switch fields more easily than expected.
Quality, standards, and process reliability. Anyone who has worked in regulated manufacturing environments with standards, audits, and documentation requirements can quickly grasp the logic of the highly regulated energy sector. This is because technical regulations, safety requirements, and approval processes follow similar principles.
Technical Sales and Customer Understanding. For sales professionals, it is not so much the product that matters as the ability to sell complex technology to discerning B2B customers, calculate quotes, and build long-term customer relationships. This expertise is in high demand in the sales of energy services, charging infrastructure, storage solutions, and contracting models.
What is usually lacking is specialized knowledge that can be acquired through targeted training: the fundamentals of the energy industry, the regulatory framework, and specific standards. Continuing education programs that can be completed while working often last only a few months in this field. In addition, many employers are now actively providing training for career changers themselves, as the shortage is more acute than the supply.

For applicants, the translation is crucial. A resume that describes experience in the language of the target industry makes a stronger impression than a mere list of previous positions. Instead of “Project Manager, Drive Technology,” it’s advisable to use wording that highlights responsibilities, plant size, budget, and team leadership, and establishes a connection to the energy sector. It’s also important to specifically address any minor gaps in knowledge and actively demonstrate your willingness to learn during the interview.
When making hiring decisions, executives and HR managers need to rethink their approach. Those who tie job profiles too closely to industry experience exclude precisely the candidates who could solve the labor shortage. A more successful approach is a competency-based perspective that evaluates transferable skills and provides structured onboarding with a training plan, mentoring, and targeted professional development. Studies of the automotive industry show that a significant portion of the workforce needs to develop new skills anyway. This pool of technically skilled professionals is available to the energy sector if companies are willing to evaluate potential rather than a perfect fit.
By 2026, switching careers to the energy sector will no longer be a stopgap measure, but rather a strategically sound option for both sides. What matters less is the candidate’s original industry than their ability to demonstrate transferable experience and pursue targeted additional training.
