According to the Federal Statistical Office & SPECTARIS e.V., orthopaedics, joints, prosthetics, implants (16%) and radiology (10%) represent the largest area of the medical device industry. Strictly speaking, orthopaedics and trauma surgery is considered a surgical speciality according to the German Continuing Education Regulations. This is the third largest area of medical devices.

According to BVMed's Autumn 2018 survey, sales positions account for more than half (61%) of all vacancies in the 12,300 medical technology companies in Germany, as they are at the top (38%) of the most difficult to fill positions. The companies also find it difficult to fill positions in Regulatory Affairs Manager (QM, Safety) (23%), Executives (15%), Key Account Manager (13%), Marketing and Communication (12%), IT Management (12%) and Research and Development (10%).
