Seriously ill children need more than medical care - they need attention, comfort and small moments of joy. Especially in hospital, far away from familiar surroundings, warmth and closeness are indispensable. With our donation to the “Tommy nicht allein” project, we want to help ensure that seriously ill children and their families receive exactly this kind of support. Because every smile we can give makes a difference.
“Tommy nicht allein” is an extraordinary volunteer project that was launched at Greifswald University Hospital in 2016. Back then, medical students noticed a six-month-old child who cried a lot in a hospital room - Tommy. The students took the time to play with him and give him attention. This spontaneous help turned into a permanent initiative that has accompanied many children since then.
Today, around 30 clinic nannies look after young patients suffering from cancer or serious chronic illnesses on a voluntary basis. Over 130 children have been lovingly cared for in recent years.
Caring for sick children in hospital is more than just a pastime: studies show that affection, play and human closeness can significantly reduce the psychological stress of young patients. Positive experiences have even been proven to promote the healing process.
Especially in the case of longer stays or serious diagnoses, the emotional relief is also invaluable for parents. They can relax, attend appointments or simply take a deep breath.
The clinic nannies give the children a bit of normality:
Around one in three children in care is visited almost every day - often for months or even years. Many children build up a close emotional bond with their nannies.
In view of the tense situation in German children's hospitals, it was only natural for us to support “Tommy nicht allein” 2022 with our Christmas donation. We want to set an example for more humanity in everyday hospital life - especially in difficult times.
You can help too!
Whether through a donation, volunteering or sharing an idea: every support helps to give courage and joy to sick children.
